Authorities in Haryana’s Kaithal district have detained an individual linked to a cyber fraud case involving a deceptive investment scheme.

The Fraud Scheme

Authorities in Haryana’s Kaithal district have detained an individual linked to a cyber fraud case involving a deceptive investment scheme. A local resident was reportedly deceived into transferring 9.5 million rupees through a social media profile posing as a female user, leading to a complex financial scam.

The Deceptive Profile

The accused, identified as Anil Kumar from Nakta village in Fatehabad district, was taken into judicial custody following court proceedings. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on financial transactions, digital evidence, and potential network connections.

The Victim’s Experience

The victim, Ashok Kumar from Guhla, received a friend request in May 2026 from an account using the alias ‘Nandita Sood’. After accepting the connection, the individual allegedly engaged in conversations via messaging platforms. The profile later introduced the complainant to an online investment opportunity, claiming high returns.

The Investment Scam

A link was shared, prompting the victim to create an account on a fraudulent website. Initial small investments reportedly yielded visible profits, encouraging further transactions. Between June 2026, Ashok transferred 9.5 million rupees into 11 separate bank accounts as instructed by the scheme.

The Investigation

The fake platform displayed a balance of 38.49 million rupees, including purported earnings. When the victim attempted to withdraw the funds, the system allegedly blocked the transaction and demanded an additional 7.17 million rupees as a withdrawal fee. This requirement, described as a 25% processing charge, raised suspicions, prompting the complainant to halt further payments.

Financial Transactions

Police investigations revealed the accused provided the victim with bank account details through the fraudulent website’s customer support channel. The 11 accounts were used to receive the transferred funds, which are now under scrutiny. Investigators are analyzing the accounts to determine ownership, fund movement, and potential links to a broader criminal network.

Expert Insights

Digital evidence, including mobile phone records, banking transactions, and social media activity, is being examined to trace the operators of the ‘Nandita Sood’ profile and establish Anil Kumar’s role. Cybersecurity experts highlighted common tactics employed by fraudsters, such as initial profit displays to build trust.

Cybersecurity Advice

A former IPS officer and cybersecurity analyst, Prof. Triveni Singh, noted that scammers often allow small withdrawals to create a false sense of legitimacy before demanding additional payments. He advised investors to independently verify the authenticity of platforms, including company registrations, bank details, and regulatory compliance.

Ongoing Case

Prof. Singh emphasized that displayed profits do not guarantee actual liquidity in bank accounts. The case remains under active investigation, with authorities focusing on recovering the 9.5 million rupees, identifying the masterminds behind the social media profile, and determining if other individuals were involved. Further inquiries will assess whether Anil Kumar directly facilitated the fund transfers or operated within a larger organized scheme.

Recovery Efforts

The incident underscores the risks of online investment fraud and the importance of vigilance in digital financial transactions.
