Authorities in Assam’s Nagaon district have detained two individuals suspected of orchestrating a 15 crore rupee cyber fraud scheme.
Authorities in Assam’s Nagaon District Detain Two Suspects
Authorities in Assam’s Nagaon district have detained two individuals suspected of orchestrating a large-scale financial fraud scheme, which allegedly siphoned approximately 15 crore rupees from accounts in multiple states through coordinated cybercriminal activities. The operation was initiated following intelligence reports about illicit digital transactions targeting vulnerable individuals. During a late-night raid on Monday in the Katimari area near Nagaon town, law enforcement apprehended Afzal Hussain and Rashidul Haque, residents of Chhoto Rupahi under the Nagaon Sadar police station jurisdiction. Initial investigations suggest their involvement in channeling illicit funds through a complex network of bank accounts.
Seizure of Financial Instruments and Digital Assets
Law enforcement recovered a substantial collection of financial documents and digital devices utilized in unauthorized transactions. The confiscated items comprised 22 ATM cards, 19 PAN cards, four bank checkbooks, 10 mobile phones, and 50 SIM cards. These materials are being analyzed to determine their role in facilitating fraudulent activities.

Investigation into Cross-State Financial Disbursements
Preliminary police assessments suggest that the network siphoned approximately 15 crore rupees from accounts outside Assam. Although specifics about the affected states, the number of victims, and the ultimate destinations of the funds are under investigation, authorities consider the seized materials critical to the fraud’s execution. Investigators are examining financial records linked to each debit card and checkbook to trace fund distribution. Additionally, call logs from the 50 recovered SIM cards may reveal connections to individuals managing withdrawal operations in other regions.
Expanded Enforcement Efforts in Central Assam’s Cybercrime Zones
The arrests underscore an intensified crackdown in Nagaon and Morigaon, two districts in central Assam that have emerged as focal points for organized cybercrime activities. Recent operations in Lahorighat and Moirabari within Morigaon resulted in the detention of multiple suspects, revealing a pattern of cross-district financial transactions. Law enforcement is expanding its probe to identify individuals involved in setting up mule accounts, providing bulk telecom services, or assisting with cash withdrawals. The two arrested individuals are currently detained as investigators assess their roles in the larger 15 crore rupee fraud scheme.
