Dr Girish Kumar Singh, founding director of AIIMS Patna, lost ₹3.22 lakh through unauthorized transactions spanning over two months, with police investigating the case.
Incident Overview
Cybercriminals have stolen ₹3,22,408 from the bank account of Dr Girish Kumar Singh, the founding director of AIIMS Patna and a senior orthopaedic specialist, through a series of unauthorized transactions spanning more than two months. The 72-year-old physician, affiliated with the Prasad Institute of Medical Sciences and based in Eldeco Emperor on Dr Baijnath Road in Nishatganj, identified the breach after multiple deductions occurred without his consent.
Police Investigation
The Mahanagar police in Lucknow are investigating a series of fraudulent activities that targeted Dr Singh’s Indian Bank account between July 3 and September 15. The victim confirmed that he had not disclosed his banking credentials, including one-time passwords, online banking access details, or personal financial information to any third parties. The unauthorized withdrawals were only detected when he reviewed his financial records, revealing cumulative losses exceeding ₹3.22 lakh prior to the incident being reported.
Formal Complaint and Investigation
A formal complaint was submitted to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal on September 18 following the unexplained fund loss. The Mahanagar police station initiated a formal investigation after receiving the case referral. Officers are analyzing the digital footprint of the transactions, examining technical evidence, and tracing the accounts that received the illicit funds.
Security Vulnerabilities
A critical focus of the inquiry is determining how the attackers bypassed security protocols to execute multiple withdrawals without requiring an OTP or confidential authentication. While the exact method used to compromise the account remains under scrutiny, authorities are working to identify the individuals who benefited from the transfers. No arrests have been made at this stage.
Ongoing Efforts
The case highlights vulnerabilities in financial account security and underscores the need for heightened vigilance against phishing and credential theft tactics. Investigative teams are continuing to trace the flow of stolen funds and assess potential entry points exploited by the perpetrators. The case remains active as law enforcement seeks to recover the stolen assets and hold those responsible accountable.
