According to the victim, Sajan Verma, a Kalka-based accounting professional, he was invited to join a stock trading group via a WhatsApp message on March 13.
He was invited to invest money and download an application via a shared link. He made a modest initial investment before growing wary of ambiguous agreements. The accused turned off his phone when he noticed this.
He eventually defrauded the victim of ₹8.41 lakh in several transactions after luring him in with promises of large rewards.

On July 10, the accused, Charanjit Singh, also known as Rinku, was taken into custody after a case was filed. That following day, his account was frozen. On July 11, the accused appeared in court and was placed under three days of police custody.
Important information was gleaned during the remand, which should help locate and apprehend further members of the cyber fraud network. According to a police spokesman, the accused was brought before the court on July 14 and placed under judicial custody.
