“A retired railway engineer got scammed on the phone while considering it as a pension correction.”

Under the guise of a pension adjustment, cybercriminals defrauded a retired railway engineer out of ₹18.45 lakh. On June 30, 2025, the victim, Anil Kumar, of Vaishali Nagar Gas Godown Road, retired and put all of his life savings in his pension account.

Kumar got a call on Tuesday stating that, in order to guarantee a seamless pension modification, some paperwork needed to be updated. He consented to obey the caller because he trusted them. He received a PDF file on his phone shortly after.

His device was compromised as soon as he accessed the file. Several transactions were started in a matter of minutes, and his account lost ₹18.45 lakh in total.

What happened and how did it all take place?

Astonished by the unexpected loss, Kumar went straight to the Kotwali police station and filed a report. The cyber cell and bank representatives were included in the inquiry when the police filed a case. To find the offenders, officials are tracking down the transactions and looking at digital footprints.

“This is an attack on my years of hard work, not just financial theft,” Kumar said. “In an effort to safeguard my future, I had stored all of my retirement funds in this account.”

Experts Warn Senior Citizens

Prof. Triveni Singh, a cybercrime specialist and former IPS officer, emphasized that these scams are becoming remarkably prevalent.

“Given their propensity to trust technology without questioning dubious calls, messages, or files, senior citizens and pensioners are particularly vulnerable. These scams will continue until they learn to spot digital warning signs,” he said.

The public has been advised by police to exercise caution and not believe unsolicited calls, links, or files. Instead of depending on unidentified callers, they suggested that pensioners verify information directly with authorized offices.

An Increasing Risk to the Elderly

This instance demonstrates how senior adults in India are becoming more susceptible to cybercrime. Many people view their pension as the safety net of a lifetime’s work, not just money.

One of the most urgent problems of the digital age is now safeguarding these savings from internet scammers.
