“The latest version of ChatGPT, ‘5.1’, is going to be much smarter and interactive than the previous version.”

On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, OpenAI released an update to their GPT-5 AI model: the “warmer” and “more intelligent” GPT-5.1 Instant model and the simpler GPT-5.1 Thinking model.

While the GPT-5.1 Thinking model was better tuned to handle both simple and complex queries, enabling both rapid and slow answers depending on the context, the company reported that GPT-5.1 Instant was their most popular model.

“A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT” would be provided by GPT-5.1.”

“For the first time, GPT-5.1 Instant may employ adaptive reasoning to determine when to reflect before answering more difficult questions, producing more correct and comprehensive responses while maintaining speed.”

“For a period of three months, GPT-5 (Instant and Thinking) will be accessible in ChatGPT under the legacy models selection for paid members. This will allow users to compare and adjust at their own pace.”

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, praised the latest releases and noted that users may modify the AI models to suit various modes and communication styles.

“GPT-5.1 is now available! It’s a pleasant improvement. The enhancements in instruction following and adaptable thinking are really appealing to me. Altman wrote on X (previously Twitter) on Thursday, “We’ve made it easier to customize ChatGPT, and the intelligence and style improvements are good too.” You can adjust it yourself or choose from presets (Default, Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Candid, or Quirky).”

Examples of the new models’ responses to prompts were given by OpenAI, which then contrasted them with those produced by the previous GPT-5 model. For instance, GPT-5 provided relaxation advice to a stressed-out user, but GPT-5.1 addressed the user by name right away, expressed empathy for their recent struggles, and then provided comparable advice.

GPT-5.1 Thinking explained a technical idea in a similarly informal manner.

Before reaching free and logged-out users, GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking began to roll out to premium customers (Pro, Plus, Go, and Business subscriptions). The distribution will occur gradually over the next few days, with OpenAI emphasizing that users will have enough time to transition to a new model before an older one is eliminated.

When the firm first introduced the GPT-5 model, several customers complained on social media about how much they missed the earlier models, which felt “warmer” and more “friendly.” Others complained that they did not have enough time to move their projects or modify their workflow due to an abrupt model upgrade.

While acknowledging the issue, Altman pointed out that many ChatGPT users had strong emotional relationships to particular AI models.
