Malwarebytes Introduces Scam Guard: Real-Time Scam Protection for Desktop Users
Cybersecurity Firm Malwarebytes Expands Scam Detection Tool to Desktop Platforms
Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes has announced the expansion of its scam detection tool, Scam Guard, to desktop platforms for both Windows and Mac users. This move aims to provide real-time protection against scams, threats, and malware, offering users expert advice and digital safety recommendations.
The Rise of Scams and the Need for Protection
The need for such a tool is underscored by the alarming rise in scams globally, with a reported $442 billion lost to consumers in the past year, according to the Global State of Scams 2025 report by GASA. Despite the prevalence of scams, with over half of adults encountering them daily, a significant two-thirds of people struggle to distinguish scams from legitimate interactions.
How Scam Guard Works
Scam Guard addresses this challenge by providing immediate feedback and guidance on suspicious messages, phishing attempts, questionable text messages, and calls from unfamiliar numbers. The tool leverages AI-powered threat intelligence, driven by decades of research and expertise from Malwarebytes’ cybersecurity team, to deliver trusted verdicts and next-step guidance.
Key Features of Scam Guard
- Real-time threat intelligence
- Comprehensive scam detection
- 24/7 support
The tool can recognize a wide range of scams, including romance, phishing, financial fraud, text, robocall, and shipping fraud, and can learn from new or unknown scams submitted by users to enhance community protection.
According to Michael Sherwood, VP of Product at Malwarebytes, “Scams have become increasingly sophisticated, with criminals utilizing AI tools to create convincing impersonations of well-known brands and exploiting technological vulnerabilities to deceive people into losing billions of dollars. It is essential that we fight back through innovative products, policy, regulation, and community engagement. No one is immune to falling prey to these scams.”
Impact and Expansion
Initially released for mobile users in June, Scam Guard has already demonstrated its impact, with the tool providing critical guidance in 15% of user interactions. By expanding its availability to desktop platforms, Malwarebytes aims to further empower users to stay ahead of cybercriminals and protect themselves against the growing threat of scams.
