AWS Data Centers Damaged in Drone Strikes

A series of drone strikes has damaged Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the Middle East, causing a significant outage that is still affecting numerous cloud computing services.

Impact on AWS Facilities

The incident has impacted AWS facilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain, with the company confirming that the strikes were likely part of a response to recent US and Israeli military actions in the region.

According to Amazon, the attacks have disrupted operations in the AWS Middle East (UAE) Region (ME-CENTRAL-1) and the AWS Middle East (Bahrain) Region (ME-SOUTH-1).

The company reported that two facilities in the UAE were directly struck by drones, while a nearby strike in Bahrain caused damage to a third facility.

Damage and Recovery Efforts

The drone strikes have resulted in structural damage, disrupted power delivery, and required fire suppression activities, which in turn caused water damage.

Amazon is working closely with local authorities to prioritize the safety of personnel and restore physical infrastructure.

The company is also exploring multiple software-based recovery paths that do not require the underlying facilities to be fully operational.

Current Status and Recommendations

At present, three availability zones in the UAE remain significantly impaired, while a third zone in Bahrain is still affected by a localized power issue.

Amazon is advising impacted customers to back up their data and migrate workloads to unaffected AWS regions.

The company recommends that customers exercise their disaster recovery plans, recover from remote backups stored in other regions, and update their applications to direct traffic away from the affected regions.

Heightened Risk of Cyberattacks

The incident has prompted the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to warn British organizations of a heightened risk of Iranian cyberattacks amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Restoration Efforts and Recommendations

Amazon is prioritizing the restoration of services and tools that will enable customers to back up and migrate data and applications out of the impacted regions.

In response to the outage, Amazon is recommending that customers consider using AWS regions in the United States, Europe, or Asia Pacific, depending on their latency and data residency requirements.

The company is working to restore physical infrastructure and is prioritizing the safety of its personnel throughout the recovery efforts.
