The accused individuals posed as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Mumbai Crime Branch to contact the victim via video calls, using platforms like WhatsApp and Signal to mask their identities.
Technical analysis and financial trail mapping led to the coordinated arrests of Bhupendranath Sarkar (42), Shubham Singhal (32), Sanjay Kumar Singh (34), and Sonu Kumar (28).
Modus Operandi:
The accused utilized encrypted apps and fake identities to maintain anonymity during the scam, adopting the tone and language of government officials to gain the victim’s trust.
Public Advisory:
- Authorities have issued a public advisory warning citizens against falling prey to such scams, urging them to remain vigilant against unsolicited calls or video calls from individuals claiming to be officials from agencies such as the TRAI, ED, CBI, or RBI.
