Major Cyber Fraud Network Busted in Ahmedabad

In a significant breakthrough, authorities in Ahmedabad have dismantled a sophisticated cyber fraud network that swindled a victim out of ₹2.27 crore under the guise of a “digital arrest.”

The Scam Unfolded:

The accused individuals posed as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Mumbai Crime Branch to contact the victim via video calls, using platforms like WhatsApp and Signal to mask their identities.

According to investigators, the money trail spanned Bihar, Haryana, and West Bengal, with initial deposits made into accounts in these states before being transferred through a complex network linked to West Bengal.

Technical analysis and financial trail mapping led to the coordinated arrests of Bhupendranath Sarkar (42), Shubham Singhal (32), Sanjay Kumar Singh (34), and Sonu Kumar (28).

Modus Operandi:

The accused utilized encrypted apps and fake identities to maintain anonymity during the scam, adopting the tone and language of government officials to gain the victim’s trust.

Investigators revealed that the gang members possessed technical skills, enabling them to mask their locations and identities using digital tools.

Public Advisory:

Authorities have issued a public advisory warning citizens against falling prey to such scams, urging them to remain vigilant against unsolicited calls or video calls from individuals claiming to be officials from agencies such as the TRAI, ED, CBI, or RBI.
People have been cautioned against clicking on suspicious links, particularly APK files, and to enable two-factor authentication on their social media accounts.

Victims of cyber fraud are encouraged to report incidents promptly by contacting the national helpline 1930 or visiting the nearest cybercrime police station.

Authorities have assured that complainants’ identities will be kept confidential in sensitive cases.
