Kali Linux 2026.1 Update Brings BackTrack Mode, New Tools, and Kernel Upgrade

The latest iteration of the popular penetration testing platform, Kali Linux, has been released with a range of exciting features and improvements.

New Features and Improvements

Version 2026.1 marks the culmination of the annual theme refresh, introducing a visually overhauled user interface and a new BackTrack-inspired mode within the kali-undercover tool.

  • BackTrack mode: A new mode within kali-undercover that replicates the look and feel of BackTrack 5, serving as a tribute to the 20th anniversary of BackTrack Linux.
  • New tools: Eight new tools have been added to the network repositories, including:
    • AdaptixC2: A post-exploitation and adversarial emulation framework.
    • Atomic-Operator: Executes Atomic Red Team tests across multiple operating systems.
    • Fluxion: A security auditing and social-engineering research tool.

The kernel has been upgraded to version 6.18, bringing numerous performance enhancements and bug fixes.

According to the Kali team, “This update brings significant improvements to the overall stability and performance of the system.”

In addition to these main updates, the Kali NetHunter app has seen several updates, addressing issues related to WPS scanning, HID permissions, and the back button.

However, users of the kali-tools-sdr metapackage will encounter some challenges due to known breakage affecting certain Software Defined Radio tools. The Kali team anticipates a fix in the next release.

Device-Specific Changes

Specifically notable updates include:

  • A new kernel for the Redmi Note 8.
  • A patch to libnexmonkali for the Samsung S10 series, fixing internal wireless firmware usage and enabling reaver, bully, and kismet on these devices.

The inclusion of 25 new packages, removal of nine, and delivery of 183 package updates further enhance the capabilities of Kali Linux 2026.1.
