Retired Central Excise Officer Loses Lakhs to Fake Gas Bill Scandal
Retirement Savings Depleted Through Deceptive Energy Bill Scam
A former high-ranking tax official has fallen victim to a sophisticated phishing scheme involving a fake energy bill notice.
- The incident began on March 14th when the victim received a message from an unknown number claiming their energy bill was overdue and threatening disconnection unless payment was made within five minutes.
- The message appeared legitimate due to its inclusion of the actual energy company’s logo.
The victim was subsequently pressured into making a payment of 12 rupees via the APK installation, which granted the scammer access to the victim’s financial transactions, allowing them to siphon off funds over time.
"Cybercriminals have developed tactics to rapidly exploit mobile and social media platforms, often resulting in significant financial losses," stated a cybersecurity expert.
Law enforcement officials have highlighted the vulnerability of older adults to such scams, citing their tendency to be less familiar with technology and more trusting of unsolicited communications.
- To prevent similar incidents, authorities advise against installing APK files from unknown sources.
- Cybersecurity specialists recommend keeping mobile devices up-to-date, enabling two-factor authentication, and making payments only through official applications.
The investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrator is ongoing, with law enforcement urging the public to remain cautious when receiving unexpected notifications or requests related to bills, job opportunities, or bank transactions.
