A Recent Operation Brings Down a Multi-State Cyber Fraud Network

The Cyberabad Police in Hyderabad recently conducted an operation that resulted in the arrest of 19 individuals and the detection of 17 related cases. This sophisticated racket had been operating across India, utilizing various digital platforms and financial channels to carry out its illicit activities.

Online trading and investment scams accounted for most of the cases, with at least 11 instances of victims being lured into fake investment platforms promising unusually high returns.
In one notable instance, a local resident in Hyderabad lost ₹2.93 crore after being deceived by a fake investment group that claimed to offer expert advice.
The scam relied heavily on mule bank accounts and mobile numbers obtained using forged documents, allowing the perpetrators to transfer funds across multiple accounts and evade detection.

Digital Scams Exposed Beyond Trading

Apart from trading scams, the operation also exposed cases involving digital arrest frauds, fake job offers, and part-time job scams. These methods employed social engineering tactics, impersonation, and psychological manipulation to extract money from victims.

The police noted that such scams are continually evolving, with perpetrators combining multiple techniques to maximize their impact and avoid detection.
Among the 19 arrested individuals, some were directly involved in providing mule accounts and facilitating fund transfers for the network.

According to the authorities, “This case highlights the growing sophistication and organization of cybercrime in India, which often leverages digital tools and financial loopholes to operate undetected.”

Refunds Issued, Awareness Raised

Courts have already approved 884 refund orders in 125 cases, with approximately ₹4.35 crore set to be returned to those affected. Authorities urge citizens to exercise caution when encountering unsolicited investment offers, unknown groups, or suspicious job opportunities.

Early reporting of cyber fraud can significantly increase the chances of recovering stolen funds, emphasizing the importance of awareness and vigilance in the face of rapidly evolving cyber threats.

The success of this operation underscores the need for sustained and tech-driven policing efforts to combat the ever-evolving landscape of cybercrime in India.
