FBI Warns About Sensitive User Data Collection by Chinese Apps

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a public warning about several high-profile Chinese apps that are collecting sensitive user data and exposing it to the Chinese government under national security laws.

Key Issues with Chinese Apps

  • Continuous data collection across entire devices, even when users grant narrow permissions.

  • Extraction of comprehensive address books containing contacts’ names, phone numbers, addresses, user IDs, and physical locations.

  • Data stored on Chinese servers “for as long as developers deem necessary,” with functionality often blocked unless users consent to unrestricted data sharing.

  • Malware and backdoors being installed on devices through third-party stores or unfamiliar websites.

According to the FBI, “these threats extend beyond the United States, posing universal risks amplified by social features like ‘invite friends’ prompts that vacuum non-consenting contacts’ data.”

Cyber Hygiene Protection Framework

The FBI has outlined a comprehensive cyber hygiene protection framework to help mitigate these risks, which includes:

  • Minimizing permissions

  • Using trusted sources

  • Maintaining continuous updates

  • Scrutinizing policy agreements

“If you notice any suspicious device behavior or confirm data compromises post-app installation, please report immediately via the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) for coordinated threat tracking and mitigation.”
