Unsettling Rise in Spam Calls in India Exposes Weaknesses in Digital Communication Ecosystem

In recent years, India has seen a significant increase in spam calls and unwanted communication activities, highlighting growing weaknesses in the digital communication ecosystem.

Rise in Complaints About Spam Calls

According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), complaints about spam calls have surged by 128% over the past three years, from 1.362 million in 2023 to 3.109 million in 2025.

Despite the implementation of artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems and stricter regulations, the problem persists, posing a major concern for consumers.

Misuse of Automated Marketing Systems

The rapid expansion of digital services and online financial systems has led to the misuse of automated marketing systems and fraudulent calling techniques. Companies are increasingly using robotic calling and auto-dialer systems to run large-scale promotional campaigns, resulting in a surge in unsolicited calls and messages.

Approximately 60% of mobile users in the country experience at least two to three spam calls or SMS messages daily, with some receiving even higher volumes.

Challenges in Identifying Spam Calls

The challenge lies in identifying spam calls, as they often appear to come from regular mobile numbers, making it difficult for users to recognize them as fraudulent.

Telcom operators and the government are utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning-based systems to detect suspicious numbers in real-time, attempting to block spam calls even before they reach users.

Action Taken Against Spammers

Strict regulatory measures introduced after May 2025 have further strengthened enforcement actions, resulting in the blocking of over 227,000 mobile handsets and taking more than 5.1 million enforcement actions. Thousands of SMS headers, templates, and accounts involved in spam activities have also been shut down.

To facilitate reporting, users can submit complaints via SMS or call 1909.

User Awareness and Cybersecurity Enforcement Measures

Cybersecurity experts emphasize that spam networks are rapidly evolving, forcing telecom operators and regulators to continually update their systems. However, they caution that technology alone cannot solve the issue.

Users are advised against sharing sensitive information, such as bank details, OTPs, or personal data, with unknown callers under any circumstances.

The ongoing struggle highlights that combating this issue requires not only advanced technology but also strong user awareness and robust cybersecurity enforcement measures.
