IPL Ticket Scam Exposes Rising Risks of Online Purchases During Cricket Season

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a breeding ground for cybercrimes as scammers target fans seeking to capitalize on the high demand for match tickets.

Fake QR Codes and False Promises Lead to Financial Losses

A recent instance involves a woman security guard in Bengaluru who fell victim to a fake IPL ticket scam, losing a total of ₹52,500 to the perpetrators.

According to reports, the victim was duped through fake QR codes and false promises of match passes. The scam began when she approached a bouncer at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where she worked, to inquire about ticket availability. The bouncer provided her with a mobile number, claiming it was associated with a ticket seller.

The victim initially paid ₹3,000 online to purchase two tickets but was later convinced to make five additional transactions between March 30 and April 4, totaling ₹49,500.

Each transaction was facilitated by the scammer sending her QR codes that resembled legitimate digital passes, further solidifying her trust in the scheme. However, when the promised tickets failed to materialize, and the scammer ceased communication, the victim realized she had been deceived.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter, analyzing the bank account where the funds were deposited, the mobile number used in the scam, and the digital payment trail.

Authorities believe the scam may be part of a wider racket involving multiple cities or states, with officials warning citizens to exercise caution when purchasing tickets from unauthorized sources.

Cybercrime experts emphasize the importance of social engineering tactics in such scams, where victims are initially tricked into making small transactions before being coerced into larger payments. The use of convincing QR codes and digital passes is a common tactic employed by scammers to gain their victims’ trust.

As the IPL season continues to drive significant ticket demand, authorities urge fans to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of ticket sellers before making any online payments. Relying on official platforms or authorized vendors can help prevent falling prey to such scams.
