In a recent trend, scammers have resorted to exploiting concerns over global conflicts to deceive consumers in Himachal Pradesh into making false LPG advance bookings. By posing as gas agency representatives, these individuals leverage the anxiety caused by regional tensions to prompt people into making hasty decisions, often resulting in significant financial losses.

The Modus Operandi

The modus operandi typically involves a phone call or SMS from someone claiming to represent a local gas agency, warning of an impending LPG shortage due to international instability. This creates a sense of urgency, prompting consumers to book their LPG supplies in advance to avoid being left without fuel. However, these claims are often fabricated, and the supposed scarcity of LPG is merely a ruse to manipulate unsuspecting individuals.

According to officials, “This is a classic case of a phishing scam where scammers create a sense of urgency to trick consumers into divulging their sensitive information.”

The Risks Involved

Once the victim has agreed to make an advance booking, they are directed to a suspicious link supposedly confirming the transaction. Unfortunately, clicking this link exposes the consumer to various cybersecurity threats, including identity theft, unauthorized access to sensitive information, and compromised bank accounts.

Legitimate gas agencies operate on official platforms and verified websites, providing transparent and secure methods for consumers to manage their LPG bookings. In contrast, scammers often use unverified links, which can put consumers’ personal and financial data at risk.

Law enforcement authorities stress the importance of swift reporting in cases like these. Within the initial three hours after discovering a potential scam, victims can significantly increase the chances of freezing fraudulent transactions and identifying the perpetrators.

The rise of such scams underscores the growing concern of cybercrime in Himachal Pradesh. Between 2023 and 2025, the state saw a substantial increase in reported cybercrime incidents, with 8,077 complaints in 2023, 12,249 in 2024, and 18,706 in 2025. As digital crimes continue to evolve, it is crucial for consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
