Two US Cybersecurity Experts Jailed for Involvement with BlackCat Ransomware Attacks
Two US Cybersecurity Experts Receive Four-Year Sentences for Aiding BlackCat Ransomware Gang
On April 30, 2026, the US Department of Justice announced the sentencing of two former cybersecurity professionals, Ryan Goldberg and Kevin Martin, who had been convicted of aiding the notorious BlackCat ransomware gang.
Goldberg and Martin initially leveraged their expertise to operate as affiliates for the BlackCat gang throughout 2023. Goldberg served as an incident response manager, while Martin acted as a ransomware negotiator.
The operation resulted in the gang targeting over 1,000 individuals and organizations globally, with the duo making approximately $1.2 million in Bitcoin from a single victim. Their scheme involved leaking sensitive information to pressure their targets into paying the demanded ransom.
However, the FBI intervened in late 2023, disrupting the BlackCat network and creating a tool that enabled hundreds of victims to regain control of their data without needing to make a payment. While Goldberg managed to evade capture, traveling through multiple countries, Martin was apprehended and subsequently faced justice.
A Third Individual Admits to Providing Sensitive Information to the Gang
A third individual, Angelo Martino, has also admitted to providing sensitive information to the gang, allowing them to increase the demands placed upon their victims. His sentencing is scheduled for July 9, 2026.
