Unsuspecting Victim Loses ₹2.7 Lakhs in Traffic Challan Scam

A recent incident in Dehradun highlights the growing menace of government-identity based cyber fraud schemes.

Fraudulent Message Purports to be from RTO

A resident in the city fell prey to a fake traffic challan scam, resulting in a loss of approximately ₹2.7 lakhs. The incident underscores the increasing misuse of messaging platforms by cybercriminals to impersonate government authorities and deceive users into making unauthorized transactions.

According to officials, the victim received a message purportedly issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO), containing a link that appeared to be connected to an official payment portal. Believing the notice to be legitimate, the individual clicked on the link and followed the instructions provided.

However, they were redirected to a fraudulent interface designed to mimic an official government website. Sensitive financial information was compromised during this process, allowing the fraudsters to initiate unauthorized transactions.

Investigation Launched, Experts Caution Public

Experts note that impersonation of government departments, such as the RTO, has become a common tactic in cyber fraud. Fraudsters exploit the credibility of official institutions to build trust and induce compliance from victims. These scams often combine phishing links, fake websites, and social engineering techniques to extract financial information or directly siphon funds.

Law enforcement agencies have observed a rise in scams involving fake government notices, including traffic challans, tax alerts, and utility payment reminders. These messages often create a sense of urgency and pressure recipients into taking swift action without verifying the authenticity of the communication. Authorities have cautioned the public to verify any such communication through official government portals and avoid clicking on suspicious links received via messaging platforms.
