The study, which spanned from 2020 to 2026, utilized more than 11 million archived snapshots to track changes in discussions across various dark web forums and marketplaces.

According to the researchers, file-sharing discussions stood out as the most prevalent individual topic within the dataset.

Analysis revealed that a small subset of themes drove most activity on the dark web, with all 55 final topic groups identified during the research classified as recurring or continuous topics. No single topic cluster appeared only once throughout the observation window.

The researchers noted that discussion activity remained concentrated within a limited number of dominant themes, indicating a stable ecosystem where certain topics persist over extended periods.

Topic lifespan measurements demonstrated that even the shortest-lived grouped topics remained active for at least two years, suggesting that thematic change in cybercrime ecosystems rarely occurs through abrupt emergence and disappearance.

The mean time between peak activity and last observed activity reached 28 months, indicating that topics typically fade over multiple periods.
