Ahmedabad Police Foil Extortion Scheme Involving AI-Generated Identities and Fake Government Documents

Law enforcement authorities in Ahmedabad, India, have apprehended a 27-year-old individual suspected of posing as a police officer to extort women through online dating and matrimonial platforms.

The Accused’s Methods

The accused, identified as Himanshu alias Rocky Panchal, allegedly utilized AI-powered image generation and digital forgery to create convincing fake identities and defraud victims out of significant amounts of money.

  • Panchal created profiles on popular platforms, including Shaadi.com, Jeevansathi, Bumble, and Hinge, and presented himself as a police officer to establish trust with potential victims.
  • He employed AI-generated images depicting himself in a police uniform to bolster his credibility.
  • Panchal also created fake government identification documents using digital tools, complete with counterfeit government seals and signatures designed to appear legitimate.

Once victims had entrusted Panchal, he would exploit their trust by making emotionally manipulative demands for money, citing various pretexts such as medical emergencies, job-related issues, or personal crises.

Investigation and Aftermath

Police have seized various items from Panchal, including an Oppo mobile phone, ₹40,000 in cash, and forged identification cards, among other incriminating evidence.

According to the police, “The case may not be isolated and could potentially involve a broader cyber-fraud scheme, with additional accomplices or a larger network possibly involved.”

Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the damage, including the total number of victims and the aggregate amount of money collected.

Law enforcement officials have issued warnings to citizens, particularly women using online dating and matrimonial platforms, to exercise caution when encountering individuals claiming to represent government agencies or law enforcement organizations.

Cautionary Measures

Authorities advise citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions when interacting with strangers online, especially those claiming to represent official institutions.

The accused remains in custody as authorities continue to analyze digital evidence, which may uncover more instances linked to the same pattern of deception.
