Erickshaw Driver Ensnared in ₹15 Crore Identity-Based Financial Scheme

A previously unsuspecting e-rickshaw driver in Kanpur, India, found herself at the center of a ₹15 crore financial scandal after her personal documents were allegedly misused by a group of individuals.

The Situation Unfolds

The affected individual, identified as Archana Mishra, resides in the Ratanpur area of Kanpur and operates an e-rickshaw to support her family. In 2020, certain individuals promised to assist her in obtaining a bank loan and opening a bank account. Under this guise, they allegedly obtained her Aadhaar card, PAN card, and other vital documents.

“According to the preliminary investigations, these individuals then utilized her identity to execute large-scale financial activities without her knowledge or consent,” said a spokesperson for the Income Tax Department.

Preliminary Investigations

The matter came to light when the Income Tax Department issued notices mentioning transactions amounting to nearly ₹15 crore linked to her name and financial identity. Her family members claim they have no involvement with such substantial sums, as they struggle financially.

Expert Insights

Renowned cybercrime expert Prof. Triveni Singh emphasized that organized cyber and financial criminals are increasingly relying on identity theft as a primary method of perpetrating large-scale financial schemes.

“Strengthening multi-layer KYC verification systems, face authentication mechanisms, and real-time transaction monitoring frameworks are crucial to detect suspicious financial activity at an early stage,” he stressed.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are currently scrutinizing bank accounts, mobile numbers, IDs, KYC records, and the overall financial trail associated with the transactions to determine which entities were linked to her stolen identity. Initial findings indicate that the case might be connected to a broader organized network involved in fake banking operations and identity theft.

A local police official has been suspended, and departmental inquiries have been launched. As the investigation unfolds, agencies are working to identify the individuals responsible for the alleged fraud and uncover any potential connections to other compromised identities within the suspected financial scheme.
