Avoid Scam Vacations: Online Booking Scams Exposed
Cyber Scammers Target Travelers with Fake Online Bookings
As the travel season heats up, a growing number of travelers are falling prey to sophisticated cyber scams that promise heavily discounted hotel and tour packages.
According to reports from the Jaipur police department, over 127 complaints have been filed in recent weeks, resulting in losses totaling over ₹66 lakhs.
Sophisticated Scams
The scammers operate with precision, using cloned websites, fake customer care numbers, and social media advertisements to lure victims into making advance payments for non-existent bookings.
In some cases, the perpetrators even go so far as to share videos or images of the hotel properties to build trust with their marks.
One victim, a businessman from Jaipur, reported losing money on a supposed Goa trip booking after contacting a customer care number found on Google.
Similarly, a young traveler fell victim to a scam while trying to book a tour package in Manali, while a family was duped out of money after attempting to book a resort in Rishikesh.
Expert Warning
Experts point to the fact that the scammers create a convincing digital ecosystem, replicating the look and feel of legitimate business websites and customer care systems.
This makes it increasingly difficult for users to distinguish between real and fake platforms.
“Cyber frauds have become more complex and sophisticated,” warns Professor Triveni Singh, a cybercrime expert and former IPS officer.
“They create fake websites, fake reviews, and fake customer care systems, making it hard for users to verify the authenticity of online services.”
Prevention Tips
- Only use verified official websites or authorized mobile apps.
- Never rely solely on search engine results or unknown customer care numbers.
- Be wary of unusually cheap deals or last-minute offers that require immediate payment.
- If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
