Cyber Crime: Man Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer

A 32-year-old man from the Surendranagar district in Gujarat, India, has been arrested for creating a fake online persona posing as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and using AI-generated images and forged documents to deceive people.

Modus Operandi:

The suspect created a convincing online presence by showcasing himself as a high-ranking police officer, leveraging the perceived authority and trust associated with law enforcement officials.

Methods Used:

The accused generated highly realistic images of himself wearing police uniforms using artificial intelligence tools and circulated them on social media. He also created multiple forged government documents, including identity cards, duty passes, transfer orders, and no-objection certificates.

Tactics Used to Target Victims:

  • The accused presented himself as a senior police official capable of assisting in official matters.
  • In one instance, he convinced a man from Madhya Pradesh that he could help unfreeze a bank account, collecting ₹22,000 in the process.
According to the investigating officers, “The accused admitted to being unemployed and having devised the scheme to earn quick money. He confessed to using AI-based tools to create a convincing online identity and generate fake documents.”

Investigation and Future Concerns:

Authorities are tracing additional digital evidence and possible links to other victims. Cybersecurity experts warn that the misuse of AI-based image and document generation tools could significantly increase the complexity of online frauds in the future.
