Manipur Takes Action Against Rumors and Inflammatory Content

The government of Manipur has launched a comprehensive crackdown on rumors and inflammatory content disseminated through social media platforms.

187 social media accounts were blocked.
Approximately 3,200 posts identified as potentially inciting violence, tension, or spreading misinformation were eliminated.

The operation, conducted in collaboration with the state’s IT department and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, aims to mitigate the impact of malicious online content on the community.

A specialized digital monitoring system was established to identify suspicious posts. Over 5,400 posts were identified, with a substantial number having already been removed, and several others remaining under review.

According to the top state police leadership, “The proliferation of misinformation on social media extends beyond the virtual realm and has tangible effects on real-world situations.”

The cyber unit of the police has been diligently tracking content intended to spread rumors or foster tension between communities.

Social Media Awareness Campaign

The administration has augmented its official social media presence to ensure that reliable and authenticated information reaches the public expeditiously. There has been a notable increase in followers across official platforms, indicating that citizens are increasingly reliant on verified government communication channels.

Digital Verification Systems

Giving the delicate nature of the situation in the state since 2023, the consequences of misinformation have become particularly severe. Therefore, the government and police have prioritized cyber monitoring, false news detection, and digital verification systems.

Efforts are also underway to enhance technological infrastructure and digital intelligence capabilities, facilitating quicker identification and removal of inflammatory content.

Security Measures

Simultaneously, security measures on the ground are being fortified. The police department is being outfitted with modern vehicles, communication systems, forensic facilities, and cutting-edge surveillance technologies.

Several suspects have already been apprehended, and investigations into numerous cases are ongoing.

According to the top state police leadership, “The primary goal of this campaign is not merely enforcing laws but also ensuring the long-term preservation of societal peace and stability.”

Citizens are urged to refrain from disseminating unverified or suspicious information on social media and instead rely solely on authorized sources for updates. It is made clear that stringent action will persist against those who spread inflammatory content, with no leniency extended in such instances.

The administration currently remains committed to bolstering digital monitoring, cybersecurity, and social harmony, and tighter regulations for social media platforms might be implemented in the future to effectively counteract rumors and provocative content.
