The Scam’s Initial Approach

The interaction typically begins with one of two fabricated scenarios. The sender claims either that their account was reported by the recipient or that they mistakenly reported the recipient’s account. When the victim denies involvement, the scammer quickly dismisses the accusation, framing it as an error and maintaining the dialogue.

Fabricated Evidence and Urgency

The scam progresses with the presentation of fabricated evidence. A screenshot is shared, mimicking official communication with a formal tone, a unique reference number, and a deadline—often 12 hours—before account suspension or restricted functionality. Some iterations direct victims to a Discord contact posing as a support representative, while others include misleading legal notices referencing irrelevant regulations.

The Critical Moment: Verification Code Request

The critical moment arrives when the scammer requests a verification code. They claim a support agent needs the code to confirm the victim’s non-involvement in the reported activity. During the conversation, the scammer initiates an account recovery process, triggering the platform to send a login code to the victim’s device. The timing aligns with the scammer’s script, ensuring the code arrives immediately after the request.

Account Compromise and Coercion

The victim is instructed to read the code aloud, which the scammer then uses to log in, change the password, and lock the victim out. In some cases, victims are coerced into updating their account’s associated email address to one controlled by the scammer, followed by demands for payment via gift cards or other methods, accompanied by threats of account deletion or misuse.

Official procedures for handling reports, moderation, and appeals are conducted internally through designated channels. No platform requires direct communication between reported users or involves third-party messaging services like Discord for verification. Any request that deviates from these protocols is fraudulent.
