Two Arrested in Azamgarh’s ₹3.14 Crore Customs Impersonation Fraud Police in Azamgarh district have apprehended two individuals linked to a ₹3.14 crore investment fraud scheme involving deceptive practices targeting financial investors.

Details of the Fraud

Accused Individuals

The accused allegedly misrepresented themselves as officials from the Customs Department, leveraging fabricated credentials to solicit investments under false pretenses. Investigations revealed that the suspects utilized counterfeit identity documents and forged official papers to establish credibility with potential victims. A key figure in the operation, Vikas Rai Sharma, reportedly presented fake identification and claimed familial ties to a Customs Commissioner in Delhi, a fabricated connection designed to bolster trust.

Modus Operandi

The scheme promised returns ranging from 50 to 90 percent on investments in commodities such as copper, gold, garments, and mobile phones. The modus operandi involved initial small payouts to investors to cultivate confidence, a common tactic in fraudulent investment schemes. Victims, including a complainant and his family members, collectively invested ₹3.14 crore across multiple transactions. While ₹51 lakh was reportedly returned, the remaining ₹2.63 crore was allegedly misappropriated. When victims sought repayment, the accused reportedly resorted to intimidation and threats, a pattern observed in the later stages of such frauds.

Legal Proceedings

Ongoing Investigations

The arrested individuals, Vikas Rai (30) and Vishal Rai (34), were taken into custody from Kandharapur Market. Both were originally from Jolhapur village and had been evading authorities prior to their apprehension. Legal proceedings against the arrested individuals have been initiated, with ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend additional suspects. Investigators are analyzing financial records and bank transactions to trace the full scope of the fraud and facilitate the recovery of misappropriated funds.

Expert Advice

Cybersecurity Researcher’s Statement

A cybersecurity researcher from Algoritha Security highlighted that fraudsters frequently adopt identities of government officials, financial experts, or corporate executives to legitimize their schemes. The researcher emphasized that high or guaranteed returns are red flags and advised investors to independently verify credentials and documentation before committing funds.

Broader Context

Similar Cases in Uttar Pradesh

This case aligns with a broader trend in Uttar Pradesh, where similar frauds involving impersonation of government and law enforcement agencies have been reported. A separate incident in Kanpur earlier this year involved the arrest of four suspects, including a woman, who operated under a scheme mimicking Customs and police officials. This group reportedly used an IP address traced to Islamabad and messaging apps with altered profile photos to deceive victims. The recurrence of such tactics underscores the effectiveness of leveraging perceived institutional authority to gain public trust.
