The Incident
Delhi Police have apprehended three individuals in a cyber fraud scheme that extorted approximately ₹5.80 lakh from a victim through deceptive video calls and threats from impersonators. The suspects, identified as Rajesh (18), Kunal (22), and Imran (23), all from Faridabad, Haryana, were detained following an investigation into a sextortion operation involving fabricated video interactions and financial exploitation. The case emerged after a Delhi resident, K.L. Tripathi, received an unsolicited video call on May 6 from an unidentified woman who falsely claimed to be a social media contact. During the exchange, the woman allegedly pressured the victim to disrobe, leading to the unauthorized recording of an explicit video. Subsequent calls from multiple unknown numbers followed, with perpetrators posing as law enforcement, social media representatives, and government officials. These individuals threatened to disseminate the video publicly, initiate legal proceedings, or secure the victim’s arrest unless monetary payments were made.
Investigation and Arrests
Under duress, the victim transferred funds in multiple installments through bank transfers, UPI transactions, and QR code payments, totaling ₹5.80 lakh. Upon realizing the deception, he reported the incident to the Cyber Police Station. A dedicated investigative team was established to trace the perpetrators, focusing on digital and financial evidence. Analysis of transaction records linked a portion of the stolen funds to accounts associated with Rajesh and Kunal. Rajesh was arrested on June 17, and subsequent scrutiny of financial trails led to Kunal’s identification and detention. Imran was later apprehended after being implicated in withdrawing the illicit funds via ATMs. A mobile device and SIM card linked to the crime were recovered from his possession.
