The Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF) has also highlighted the increasing use of AI-powered voice manipulation in social engineering schemes. Recent reports indicate that malicious actors are deploying advanced voice modulation software to replicate the vocal patterns of individuals’ relatives, colleagues, or associates. These fabricated audio messages typically present urgent scenarios such as medical emergencies, legal issues, or unexpected financial crises, prompting recipients to transfer funds to specified accounts or UPI addresses. Authorities note that cybercriminals can create highly realistic voice imitations using minimal audio samples, often sourced from public platforms. This capability enables attackers to bypass traditional verification methods reliant on auditory recognition. Investigators emphasize that even a convincing vocal match does not guarantee authenticity, as the technology can mimic speech patterns with remarkable accuracy. The Cyber Crime Cell has advised the public to avoid initiating financial transactions based solely on voice communications. In cases where a family member or contact appears to request immediate monetary assistance, individuals are urged to confirm the request through a pre-verified communication channel. Officials specifically caution against engaging with calls or messages from unregistered numbers and advise against transferring funds to unspecified accounts or UPI identifiers. The FCRF has identified AI voice cloning as a sophisticated form of cyber deception that leverages both technological advancements and psychological manipulation. The organization recommends that households establish preemptive verification protocols, such as designated security questions or unique identifiers, to validate urgent financial requests. Both entities stress that no transaction should be executed based exclusively on voice-based instructions. Individuals encountering suspicious AI-generated voice messages or calls are encouraged to report the incident to local law enforcement or the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930. Affected parties are also directed to submit formal complaints through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
