New Delhi: Authorities have deactivated more than 6.1 million mobile connections flagged as potential threats following public reports, while an additional 8.8 million numbers failed mandatory re-verification processes and were disconnected via an AI-driven system as part of India’s broader cybersecurity measures.

Cybersecurity Initiative Details

The initiative, disclosed in a parliamentary response, highlights efforts to combat digital fraud and cybercrime through advanced technological interventions. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reported that the action was based on 11.18 lakh complaints submitted through the Sanchar Saathi portal, which allows citizens to report suspicious communications. These reports triggered the deactivation of 6.1 million connections deemed high-risk.

DoT’s Role and ASTR System

Simultaneously, the ASTR (Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics Tool) system identified 8.8 million numbers that did not meet re-verification criteria, leading to their removal from networks. The AI platform analyzes telecom data to detect unauthorized or non-compliant mobile lines, which are often exploited for fraudulent activities.

A senior government official stated that the ASTR system plays a critical role in identifying connections used for cyber fraud, including fake call centers and digital scams.

Minister’s Statement and DIP

The minister emphasized that while cybercrime falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs’ jurisdiction, the DoT has prioritized developing technological solutions to mitigate risks. This includes the establishment of the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), which facilitates real-time data exchange between telecom regulators, law enforcement agencies, and financial oversight bodies.

SEBI’s Role and DIP Integration

The DIP, managed in collaboration with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), enables faster detection of suspicious activities. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has encouraged its regulated entities to integrate with the platform, with over 50 organizations already participating. This integration allows for quicker sharing of intelligence related to financial anomalies, enhancing coordination between telecom providers and financial institutions.

Telecommunications Infrastructure Advancements

The government also highlighted advancements in telecommunications infrastructure. As of June 2026, 5G services are available in 99.9% of districts nationwide, with the number of 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) increasing from 140,623 in March 2023 to 562,971 by June 2026. Additionally, the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) has approved 136 research projects, allocating ₹543 crore to develop next-generation technologies such as 6G, quantum communication, and satellite networks.

BharatNet Program

Under the BharatNet program, 214,912 Gram Panchayats have been connected to high-speed internet through Phase I and II, with 13,494 additional panchayats upgraded under the Amended BharatNet Programme by June 2026. These efforts aim to expand digital access while reinforcing cybersecurity frameworks.

Expert Opinion and Government Priorities

Cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh noted that fraudulent mobile lines and SIM cards are frequently used to execute financial scams. He stressed that AI-driven detection systems, combined with inter-agency collaboration, are essential for addressing organized cybercrime.

The minister reiterated that the DoT continues to prioritize technological innovation to safeguard digital ecosystems.
