Chennai Cyber Crime Wing Detains 37 Individuals in Large-Scale Online Fraud Operation

Tracking Financial Movements in 15 Cybercrime Investigations

The investigation stems from a multi-faceted inquiry into 15 separate cybercrime cases, including digital extortion schemes and fraudulent online trading activities. Law enforcement officials from the Central Crime Branch Cyber Crime unit conducted in-depth analyses to trace the flow of illicit funds through multiple banking channels. By examining victim reports, authorities compiled a detailed list of approximately 350 suspects across Tamil Nadu. Of these, 120 individuals were apprehended with support from local police units and transported to Chennai for questioning.

Identification of Financial Facilitators and Network Structures

Investigators uncovered a network of individuals known as money mules, who provided their bank accounts for monetary gain to assist cyber fraud operations. Initially, around 80 suspects were detained and interrogated, followed by an additional 40 individuals, including women and minors. Through prolonged questioning, authorities mapped out the specific roles of those directly involved in fraud activities as well as intermediaries and agents facilitating transactions.

Legal Proceedings and Community Response

After concluding the investigation, 37 suspects appeared before a local court and were remanded to judicial custody. The remaining individuals not detained received notices under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, requiring them to appear for further scrutiny. The scale of the operation attracted significant public attention, with family members of the arrested individuals gathering at the Chennai Police Commissionerate to monitor developments.
