Accused Arrested for Impersonating Police Officer via Instagram Scam
Meerut police have apprehended a suspect in a fraudulent scheme involving extortion and deceptive tactics through social media. The individual, identified as Shivam alias Shiva alias Krishna, was detained following an investigation into allegations of creating fake online identities and simulating law enforcement roles to intimidate a dairy industry professional. This arrest marks the fourth detention in the case, which involves claims of coordinated criminal activity.
The Arrest and Investigation
The investigation revealed that the accused utilized a fabricated Instagram profile to connect with the victim, a dairy operator named Shashank Sharma. According to law enforcement, the suspect admitted during interrogations that a separate individual, Rahul Pal, established the fake account under the name ‘Shashank’. This account was reportedly used to initiate contact with the victim, who was later subjected to threats and coercive demands.

The Victim’s Experience
During the interrogation, Shivam disclosed that Rahul occasionally presented himself as a police station commander or senior officer while communicating with the victim. The accused allegedly fabricated a scenario involving a complaint against the victim related to a woman, threatening legal repercussions and extrajudicial actions to pressure him into financial concessions. The victim was reportedly lured to a location near a shopping mall, where he was forcibly taken in a vehicle and transported to an office. His vision was obscured during the journey, and upon arrival, the suspects allegedly identified themselves as police personnel. They reportedly assaulted the victim and accused him of sexual misconduct, demanding ₹2 lakh as a settlement. A partial payment of ₹10,000 was made via an electronic wallet before the victim reported the incident to authorities.
Previous Arrests
Prior to Shivam’s arrest, three other individuals had been detained. Vishal, a resident of Teethra village, was the first to be taken into custody. Subsequent raids in the Mohkampur area of T.P. Nagar led to the arrest of Rahul Pal and Akash, both of whom were later remanded to judicial custody.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps
Investigators are currently analyzing digital evidence, including mobile devices, social media interactions, call records, and financial transactions, to map the roles of all suspects. The probe also aims to determine if additional victims were targeted using similar methods. Law enforcement is examining the origin of the victim’s personal data and the flow of funds from the extortion. The case highlights the use of social media platforms to facilitate impersonation and financial exploitation. Authorities emphasize that digital forensics will play a critical role in establishing the full scope of the operation. Further arrests may follow if new evidence emerges during the ongoing investigation.
Conclusion
The investigation into the alleged criminal network remains active, with police continuing to scrutinize all available data to ensure accountability for all involved parties.
