Gwalior Doctor Scammed Out of ₹50 Lakh via Fake BR Nova Trading App
A 51-year-old physician in Gwalior lost ₹50.12 lakh through a fraudulent stock trading platform named BR Nova, according to a cyber fraud report.
The Incident
A 51-year-old physician based in Gwalior reported a financial loss of ₹50.12 lakh following a cyber deception involving a counterfeit stock trading platform named BR Nova. The scam emerged when the victim attempted to withdraw funds and encountered a requirement to pay a 35% fee before accessing his assets. Dr Navdeep Chavan, who operates a medical practice in the Govindpuri Chauraha district of Gwalior, disclosed to law enforcement that the incident originated from engagement with a social media advertisement promoting stock trading opportunities.
Scam Methodology
Subsequent communication through multiple phone numbers initiated a structured process designed to establish credibility before facilitating financial transactions. This approach aligns with a widely observed strategy in similar cyber fraud cases across the country. The victim was enrolled in a group labeled Elite VIP Group B, where participants were presented with investment proposals and assertions of high returns. A contact identified as Hardik Doshi subsequently engaged the physician directly, encouraging him to proceed with the platform. Initially, the application displayed a fourfold increase in the user’s investment, a fabricated representation intended to foster trust.
Withdrawal Deception
The deception became apparent when the victim sought to withdraw funds, prompting the platform to impose a 25% profit-sharing levy and a 10% application usage charge, totaling 35% of the displayed gains. This demand for additional fees served as the catalyst for the victim to recognize the fraudulent nature of the scheme.
Similar Cases and Industry Impact
The BR Nova incident reflects a recurring methodology observed in numerous cyber fraud cases nationwide. Over the past year, similar tactics have resulted in substantial financial losses, including a ₹1.23 crore scam targeting a Mumbai project manager through a comparable trading group and a ₹1.77 crore loss in Mysuru linked to a fake application called Polen Capital. Cases in Faridabad, Noida, and Bathinda have also reported significant financial damages.
Industry Analysis
Industry analyses indicate that fraudulent trading applications collectively caused Indian investors to lose ₹7,061 crore in the preceding year, highlighting the escalating impact of this particular fraud model.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has repeatedly cautioned that perpetrators of such schemes construct elaborate deceptions by impersonating representatives of legitimate financial institutions. These actors often provide so-called VIP stock recommendations before directing victims to install trading applications via private links rather than official app stores. This method of distribution enables the fraudulent platforms to display manipulated data without detection for extended periods.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement agencies in Sirol, in collaboration with cybercrime units, are currently examining the financial transactions associated with Dr Chavan’s losses. This includes tracing bank accounts that received the funds, analyzing mobile numbers linked to the transfers, and reviewing digital transaction records to determine if the money was consolidated, distributed through additional accounts, or redirected through other channels. Investigators are also assessing whether Hardik Doshi operated independently or as part of a broader network managing the BR Nova platform and its affiliated groups. A critical aspect of the inquiry involves identifying the individuals controlling the recipient bank accounts and evaluating potential connections to similar fraud reports in other regions. This assessment is vital as authorities seek to determine whether such scams are orchestrated by isolated actors or by organized syndicates capable of managing multiple fraudulent platforms simultaneously.
