Microsoft has resolved a technical issue causing Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows to fail to launch or crash unexpectedly on ARM-based Windows systems.

Problem Description

The problem was initially reported after users applied security updates released on or after August 11, 2026, specifically KB5121003. Affected devices include ARM-based Windows 11 systems running version 24H2 or later, such as the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7.

Workaround and Resolution

The company confirmed that the issue primarily impacts newly deployed or freshly imaged systems that have not yet received Microsoft Store updates. Classic versions of Outlook, Word, and Excel remain unaffected.

Microsoft emphasized that users should install the latest available updates to ensure access to critical improvements and fixes.

Additional Challenges

This follows a series of recent issues tied to Windows updates, including disruptions in printing and PDF exporting caused by August 2026 .NET Framework updates. Additional challenges emerged from peripherals with RGB lighting, which triggered gaming-related crashes and EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION errors on Windows 11 systems.

User Advice

Microsoft also issued guidance to disregard alerts indicating Microsoft Defender Antivirus was disabled after recent updates. Earlier this year, the company resolved a separate issue where custom mouse and desktop settings were erased following the KB5120998 August 2026 preview update.

Users experiencing persistent issues are advised to verify their system’s update status and apply all pending patches.
