Rajasthan Man Arrested for AI Deepfake Video of Tamil Nadu CM Vijay
A 28-year-old individual from Rajasthan was apprehended in relation to a suspected financial fraud scheme involving AI-generated deepfake videos that mimicked Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister and actor Vijay, aiming to deceive the public.
Incident Discovery and Surveillance
The incident came to light through routine online surveillance by the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-CID (CBCID) Cyber Crime Cell. Investigators identified videos featuring an individual matching Vijay’s appearance, paired with a Hindi voice, which were allegedly used to lure victims into a financial deception.
Arrest and Investigation Details
The CBCID traced digital evidence linking the content to a suspect in Rajasthan, leading to the arrest of Shayabu Khan from Alwar district on September 12. Police confirmed Khan is the son of Jahoor Khan and resides in Poontholi, Lakshmangarh. During the investigation, two specialized teams were deployed to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, with local authorities assisting in locating and detaining the suspect.
Evidence Seizures and Transfer
Law enforcement seized mobile devices, SIM cards, and a central processing unit linked to the alleged activities. Khan was transferred to Tamil Nadu via a PT warrant and placed in judicial custody.
Targeted Financial Deception
The AI-generated videos reportedly directed viewers to contact a specific number for purported financial aid, targeting individuals in Madhya Pradesh and other regions. A victim in Madhya Pradesh, who claimed to have been affected by the scheme, provided testimony and evidence that bolstered the case against the accused.
Network and Foreign Entity Links
The CBCID is currently examining whether Khan operated independently or was part of a larger network. Investigators discovered similar deepfake content circulating through accounts suspected of being affiliated with foreign entities.
Challenges in Cross-Border Investigation
The probe faces challenges in tracking cross-border digital activity, with efforts focused on identifying additional participants and local collaborators.
Broader Implications of AI Fraud
The case underscores the growing threat of AI-driven impersonation in financial fraud, as authorities investigate potential connections between the arrested individual and broader operational networks. The investigation remains active, highlighting the evolving tactics of cybercriminals leveraging advanced technologies to execute deceptive schemes.
