Microsoft Teams Admins Can Now Block Custom File Extensions

Microsoft Teams is set to expand its administrative controls for file security features, enabling IT professionals to customize the range of file extensions blocked within the platform.

Enhanced File Restriction Capabilities

The update will allow organizations to tailor their security policies by modifying the list of restricted file types to better align with their specific risk management strategies. According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, this functionality is in active development and is scheduled for deployment in November 2026. The feature will be integrated into the platform’s messaging security framework, ensuring that messages containing high-risk file attachments are automatically flagged or blocked.

Microsoft’s Statement on Security Enhancements

A statement from Microsoft highlighted that the enhanced flexibility will enable enterprises to refine their file protection measures while maintaining secure collaboration environments.

Additional Security Enhancements in 2026

Once released, the tool will be accessible across all major platforms, including Android, desktop, iOS, macOS, and web-based interfaces. It will apply to standard multi-tenant cloud environments globally. Currently, administrators lack the ability to modify the default list of blocked file types through the Microsoft 365 admin center. Additional security enhancements are also in the pipeline.

External User Access Restrictions

Starting in December, IT teams will be able to restrict external user access via the Microsoft Defender portal, mitigating risks posed by cybercriminal groups leveraging social engineering tactics.

QR Code Obscuring

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced plans to introduce a feature that obscures QR codes sent by external senders to reduce phishing vulnerabilities.

Suspicious Guest Invitations Reporting

In November, the platform will roll out a tool allowing users to report suspicious guest invitations directly within Teams, enabling security teams to investigate and neutralize potential threats.

Meeting Protection Policy

Recently, Microsoft began deploying a meeting protection policy that automatically blocks external bots from joining sessions.
