FBI Warns of Escalating Scams Mimicking Law Enforcement

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has updated an alert from 2022, highlighting a surge in fraudulent schemes where scammers pose as police officers or federal agents. These scams involve threats of arrest, prosecution, or legal consequences to pressure victims into paying money.

Rise in Fraudulent Activities

Between January 2025 and July 2026, reported losses exceeded $1.6 billion, with 6,833 complaints filed. Scammers contact victims, claiming they are involved in criminal activities or have failed to meet legal obligations. They demand immediate payment to avoid severe consequences.

Scam Tactics and Methods

Scammers use tactics such as claiming victims missed jury duty, failed to appear in court, or need to renew expired documents like passports or licenses. They often employ urgent, confrontational communication styles, demanding secrecy and discouraging victims from seeking help.

Payment methods include prepaid cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or cash delivered via courier. Some scams involve spoofed government phone numbers and fabricated details, including fake links to the IC3.

Targeted Demographics

Specialized tactics target specific groups, such as medical professionals, immigrants, foreign nationals, and international students. Scammers impersonate foreign authorities to threaten extradition or passport cancellation. Some use counterfeit uniforms and staged government facilities to appear legitimate.

Advice for Victims

The FBI advises victims to verify communication by contacting official government or law enforcement channels directly. No legitimate agency would request payment through untraceable methods like prepaid cards, cryptocurrency, or couriers.

The FBI emphasized that law enforcement officials would never initiate contact to demand payment or personal information.

Evolving Nature of Cybercrime

The FBI noted the increasing use of artificial intelligence in some scams, enabling fraudsters to refine their tactics. These schemes exploit public trust, and the bureau continues to monitor and address these threats.
