Vietnamese Man Arrested in $16M Crypto Pig Butchering Scam
A Vietnamese national faces charges related to a $16 million cryptocurrency fraud scheme involving “pig butchering” tactics, according to court records.
Overview of the Case
The individual, identified as Trung Nguyen Van, was apprehended at Los Angeles International Airport on September 24 after attempting to depart the United States. He had entered the country through the San Ysidro border crossing in California on September 22.
Details of the Fraud Scheme
The fraud involved a victim who transferred approximately $16 million in digital assets between June and August 2024, believing the funds were invested in a platform named “Triangle.” Court records indicate the cryptocurrency was funneled into a private, non-centralized wallet controlled by Van.
The Department of Justice revealed that Van’s cryptocurrency accounts received $53.28 million in assets linked to wire fraud schemes targeting U.S. residents between February 2018 and December 2024. Over $53.19 million of these funds were subsequently moved to external accounts outside of centralized blockchain networks.
Impact and Broader Context
The case is part of a larger investigation into a $125 million cryptocurrency fraud operation. Victims reported similar experiences, wherein they were directed by online contacts to deposit funds into purported investment platforms promising high returns. Once the assets were transferred, victims found themselves unable to access their holdings.
“Pig butchering” scams typically involve building trust through social media, dating apps, or messaging services before exploiting victims with fake investment opportunities. The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report highlighted that investment scams accounted for 49% of all cybercrime incidents in the U.S., resulting in $8.6 billion in losses.
In February, a Chinese national was sentenced to 20 years in absentia for his role in a $73 million international pig butchering scheme. This followed the establishment of the Scam Center Strike Force, a U.S. initiative targeting cryptocurrency fraud networks based in China.
Implications and Law Enforcement Response
Van’s case underscores the growing prevalence of cryptocurrency-related crimes, with law enforcement agencies intensifying efforts to trace and dismantle illicit financial flows. The victim’s funds were traced to Van’s wallet through blockchain analysis, revealing a pattern of transfers consistent with organized fraud operations.
The U.S. government continues to emphasize the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures to combat evolving digital threats, particularly as cryptocurrency adoption increases. The case also highlights the cross-border nature of such crimes, requiring international cooperation to address financial fraud in decentralized networks.
