Jodhpur Rural Police have dismantled a cyber blackmail network that exploited young women through deceptive remote work schemes, extorting explicit content and leveraging it for coercive demands.

Operation Overview

The operation, led by the department’s cyber cell, resulted in the arrest of two individuals from Mumbai, with investigators recovering approximately 30 explicit video files, incriminating message exchanges, and personal data linked to over 200 women across multiple Indian states.

Methodology of the Scheme

The scheme relied on fabricated employment opportunities to build trust with targets. Suspects created social media profiles under a fictitious company name, posting job advertisements for low-effort tasks such as product reviews on e-commerce platforms or engagement activities on social media. Once victims became accustomed to the initial assignments, the perpetrators offered higher compensation in exchange for sharing private photographs and videos, which were later used for extortion.

Investigation Initiation

The investigation commenced after an 18-year-old woman reported sustained harassment from the group. Authorities deployed surveillance operations, including undercover tactics such as posing as delivery personnel, to track the suspects.

Arrests and Evidence

Faizan Ahmed, a 23-year-old from Mankhurd, Mumbai, was arrested on September 18. His interrogation provided critical leads that enabled the capture of Aamir Hussain, a 24-year-old associate, on September 28. Digital forensic analysis of the suspects’ devices uncovered evidence connecting them to over 50 women in Mumbai and 10 in Rajasthan, alongside data from additional regions.

Inter-Agency Collaboration

Law enforcement is collaborating with Mumbai Police following reports of an unrelated criminal case involving the same network.

Public Warnings and Advice

Public Advisories

In response to the incident, Jodhpur Rural Police have issued public warnings about unsolicited social media job offers. Officials advised the public to avoid sharing sensitive information such as government-issued IDs, digital signatures, or personal media with unverified individuals.

Reporting Procedures

The department emphasized that victims of cyber extortion should not comply with financial demands and instead report incidents immediately to local police stations or contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.
