34 Days of Coercion, ₹72.74 Lakh Lost: Agra Senior Citizen Falls Victim to Digital Deception Scheme

Incident Overview

A senior citizen in Agra allegedly lost ₹72.74 lakh after being subjected to a 34-day campaign of intimidation by individuals impersonating law enforcement officials. The scam involved persistent threats and demands for financial transfers, culminating in the victim liquidating fixed deposits to comply with the fraudsters’ instructions.

The Scam Begins

The incident reportedly began on August 21 when the victim received a call from an unidentified number. The caller claimed to represent Agra Police Lines and stated that Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) personnel required immediate communication. The fraudsters alleged that the victim’s Aadhaar details had been used to establish a bank account linked to terrorist activities in Karnataka.

Escalation of Threats

The fraudsters further claimed ₹3.50 crore was deposited into the account and accused the victim of receiving a ₹35 lakh commission. The victim denied any involvement and rejected the allegations, but the perpetrators escalated their threats. They warned of potential arrest, extrajudicial actions, and property seizure, creating a climate of fear.

Coercion and Financial Exploitation

Over the following 34 days, the fraudsters maintained contact through audio and video calls, instructing the victim to avoid discussing the matter with family members. They emphasized the sensitivity of the situation, discouraging any external communication that might interfere with the alleged investigation. During this period, the fraudsters pressured the victim to dissolve his fixed deposits and transfer the funds into his savings account.

Financial Transactions

Between August 27 and September 18, the victim allegedly transferred ₹72,74,900 into four separate accounts. The transactions included ₹22.80 lakh to Mittal Trading, ₹3.51 lakh to Autotech Enterprises, ₹30.40 lakh to Urban Kabada Solutions LLP, and ₹16.03 lakh to Cafe Bux. These transfers exhausted a significant portion of the victim’s life savings.

Discovery and Reporting

The victim eventually confided in his son, who helped verify the deception. With family support, a report was filed through the cybercrime portal. Law enforcement agencies have since issued warnings about such schemes, emphasizing that no legitimate investigative body conducts arrests or imposes digital detention via phone or video calls.

Authorities advise individuals receiving such threats to remain composed, terminate the call immediately, and report the incident to the national cybercrime helpline at 1930. Prompt action is critical to trace illicit transactions and mitigate financial losses.

Conclusion

The case highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminal networks in exploiting psychological vulnerabilities. Victims are often coerced into transferring funds under false pretenses, with fraudsters leveraging fear of legal consequences to override rational judgment. Cybersecurity experts urge the public to verify the authenticity of unsolicited communications and avoid sharing sensitive information with unknown parties.
