Apple Introduces Enhanced Age Assurance Tools for Developers

In response to evolving regulations in several regions, Apple has rolled out expanded age assurance tools to aid developers in complying with local laws. The updates, currently available in beta, build upon the existing Declared Age Range API and related App Store systems.

Automatic Age-Based App Blocking

As of February 24, 2026, Apple has begun automatically blocking users from accessing certain apps based on age confirmation. This process utilizes what the company describes as reasonable methods. However, developers may still be required to independently verify the age of users under local laws.

Declared Age Range API

The Declared Age Range API, accessible on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, provides developers with a user’s age category and a signal indicating the age assurance method employed. These signals enable developers to determine whether age-related regulatory requirements are applicable.

Compliance in Specific Regions

In Brazil, for instance, if a developer indicates that an app contains loot boxes through Apple’s age rating questionnaire, the Brazil storefront will update the app’s rating to 18+. This change is designed to ensure compliance with local regulations.

To support compliance in Utah and Louisiana, Apple has expanded the Declared Age Range API, the Significant Change API under PermissionKit, a new age rating property type in StoreKit, and App Store Server Notifications. For new Apple account holders in these states, age categories will be shared with developers’ apps when requested through the Declared Age Range API, starting May 6, 2026, in Utah and July 1, 2026, in Louisiana.

Updated API Features

The updated API includes signals indicating whether age-related regulatory requirements apply to a user and whether the user must share an age range. Additionally, the API signals whether a developer must obtain a parent or guardian’s permission before delivering significant app updates to a child. Developers can utilize the Significant Update Action, currently in beta, to present update notifications to adults.

“new signals are now available through the Declared Age Range API, including whether age-related regulatory requirements apply to the user and if the user is required to share their age range.”

Apple requires developers to adhere to its Human Interface Guidelines and provide a description of any update. The company has emphasized the importance of transparency and compliance in its blog post.
