Indian Man Arrested for Recruiting Youths for Cyber Scam Operations in Cambodia

A recent arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has shed light on a transnational cybercrime network that has been luring Indian youths to Cambodia with promises of lucrative data entry and IT jobs.

Modus Operandi of the Scam

Krishna Kumar Lakhwani, a resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was taken into custody for his alleged role in recruiting victims and sending them to cyber scam centres in Cambodia. Lakhwani’s modus operandi involved collecting $300-$400 from each candidate and arranging their travel to Cambodia through Delhi.

However, upon arrival, the recruits were allegedly taken to large scam compounds where their passports were confiscated and they were forced to participate in online fraud operations.

Scam Operations

These scam centres operate as organized fraud hubs, where workers are compelled to run schemes such as digital arrest scams, identity theft, and other online fraud operations targeting victims in different countries.

In these scams, victims are often contacted by fraudsters impersonating law-enforcement or government officials and pressured into transferring money under threats of legal action.

Investigation and Arrest

The CBI arrested Lakhwani after placing him under surveillance and intercepting him upon his return to India. During the investigation, officers recovered interview videos and passport photographs of several candidates from his mobile phone, which are believed to be linked to multiple victims recruited for the scam network.

Lakhwani’s arrest is part of a larger effort to dismantle human-trafficking-linked cyber fraud networks that lure people abroad with fake job offers and force them into online scam operations.

Warning to Job Seekers

Authorities believe he was working as a recruiter for a larger international syndicate operating cyber scam centres in Southeast Asia. The CBI has sent Lakhwani to judicial custody and continues to investigate other members of the network and the trafficking routes used to send recruits overseas.

In the meantime, officials have urged job seekers to exercise caution when verifying overseas employment opportunities and to avoid paying agents promising high-paying foreign jobs without proper documentation.

The investigation highlights the need for increased awareness and vigilance among job seekers, particularly those seeking employment opportunities abroad.
