New Cyber Forensics Lab Launched to Track and Investigate Cybercriminals
According to officials, the lab will look into hacking occurrences by following the digital footprint of criminals using the internet.
According to information obtained by The Indian Express, the Forensic Science Laboratory (Rohini) has already created the fundamental framework for a new cyber forensic lab that it plans to open this year. In the past, the FSL had a computer forensic team at the facility that was mainly responsible for recovering digital data from hard drives or cell phones that were taken from a crime scene.
We also dealt with data extraction from CCTV images in the past. But we had made the decision to begin building a cyber forensics lab since cybercrime was putting more and more strain on the police.
Along with acquiring the necessary computer equipment, the lab will also have access to the newest software, with a particular emphasis on data retrieval, according to an FSL representative
The FSL has provided a new set of directions to the Delhi Police regarding the administration of crime scenes and the shipping of crime exhibits, which has coincided with the new modifications. Senior representatives from the home department and the Delhi Police joined Principal Secretary (Home) Manoj Parida at the Delhi Secretariat on Thursday to formally distribute the booklet.
In this update, which is the second in two years, FSL officials have outlined the best practices that the Delhi Police should follow when handling a crime scene.
“To be operational, any newly added facility to the FSL requires a suitable standard operating procedure. Thus, the rules have been developed and forwarded to the courts and law enforcement,” the official stated. According to officials, the cyber forensic laboratory’s primary focus would be on investigating hacking occurrences by following the digital traces of criminals working in cyberspace.
In order to work with investigating police and mobile forensic teams to reach the crime scene as quickly as possible and gather vital evidence, FSL authorities have also established a new control room for the crime scene management division.
The action was taken in response to cases when evidence was destroyed because it was not sent to the forensic teams in a timely manner. Operators in the control room will communicate with law enforcement and send out our teams to gather evidence. Blood samples can occasionally get putrefied and need to be preserved right away, the official stated.
