Cyber Fraud Scandal: ₹5,000 Crore Network Linked to Kanpur, 23 Bank Employees Suspended
Investigations by Kanpur Crime Branch have revealed a cyber fraud operation tied to Dubai, leading to the arrest of three individuals and the scrutiny of 23 bank employees. The case involves financial transactions totaling ₹23 crore, with potential fraud reaching ₹5,000 crore.
Investigation Overview
The Kanpur Crime Branch uncovered a cyber fraud operation linked to Dubai, resulting in the arrest of three individuals and the scrutiny of 23 bank employees. The investigation revealed a network allegedly facilitating financial transactions involving approximately ₹23 crore, with suspicions that the total scale of the fraud could reach ₹5,000 crore.
Suspects and Their Roles
The suspects, identified as Kapil Verma alias Shanty, Abhay Pratap, and Rohit Singh, are accused of orchestrating a scheme to provide bank accounts for cybercriminals. These accounts were reportedly opened under false pretenses, such as offering government benefits or financial services, and then used to process illicit funds.
Transaction Details and Scale
Investigators have traced transactions totaling ₹23 crore, with ongoing analysis suggesting the potential for this figure to rise to ₹100 crore as more accounts and records are examined. The network is alleged to have funneled funds through multiple banking channels and informal money transfer systems like hawala, with claims that 40% of proceeds were distributed as commissions.
Bank Employee Involvement
The involvement of 23 bank employees has raised concerns about potential collusion. Examination of call logs, messages, and recordings from 2024 revealed interactions between the suspects and staff from institutions including Bank of India, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, DCB Bank, Overseas Bank, Ujjivan, and Airtel Payments Bank. However, police emphasized that mere contact with accused individuals does not imply criminal liability.
Investigation and Evidence
The investigation began after police connected 29 fraud complaints to suspicious banking activity, leading to the discovery of the account-arranging scheme. Digital and financial evidence, including transaction records and mobile communications, is being scrutinized to map the network’s operations. Mule accounts—bank accounts used by third parties for illicit purposes—play a critical role in obscuring the flow of stolen funds.
Ongoing Probe and Future Steps
Authorities are continuing to trace the alleged Dubai-based connections and expand the probe to additional suspects. The case remains under active investigation, with the final scope of the fraud dependent on further evidence collection and analysis. The operation highlights the complexities of cross-border cybercrime, where financial systems are exploited through organized networks and complicit intermediaries.
Mastermind and Fugitives
The arrested suspects are linked to a broader network, with Abhay Shukla alias Sultan Mirza alias John Cena identified as the alleged mastermind. Four other individuals, including Amit Singh alias Jagdish, Rahul, KP, and Ashish, are also at large. Law enforcement aims to dismantle the structure and hold all involved parties accountable as the investigation progresses.
