In order to lessen the impact of the catastrophe, it immediately shut down its systems.

“Although there is currently no proof that any customer data has been stolen, our production and retail operations have been seriously affected,” it said in a statement.

It is “working at pace” to restart its global operations. Cyber gangs have increasingly targeted luxury brands and retailers.

Recently, a cyberattack paralyzed the online capabilities of British retailer Marks and Spencer for weeks, costing the company £300 million ($402 million). In recent months, the Co-op grocery chain and the upscale department store Harrods have also suffered.

The cyberattack is the most recent setback for JLR, which recorded a steep decline in sales following its April decision to stop exporting its vehicles to the US in reaction to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

The carmaker announced in July that it would eliminate up to 500 executive positions in the UK. Under a trade agreement between Washington and London, the duty on UK auto exports was lowered from 27.5 percent to 10 percent, with a cap of 100,000 automobiles per year.
