DarkSword Exploit Forces Apple to Loosen Patching Policy
Apple Extends Security Support for Older iOS Versions Following DarkSword Exploit Discovery
In a significant departure from its traditional security approach, Apple has expanded security updates to a broader range of devices still running iOS 18, aimed at protecting users from the DarkSword exploit kit.
When iOS 26 was released, some users chose to remain on older versions due to dissatisfaction with design changes and the updated interface. As a result, a substantial number of devices remained on iOS 18, creating a larger attack surface for attackers exploiting those vulnerabilities.
Devices Affected and Available Update:
- iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 (all models)
- iPad mini (5th generation A17 Pro)
- iPad (7th generation A16)
- iPad Air (3rd 5th generation)
- iPad Air 11-inch (M2 M3)
- iPad Air 13-inch (M2 M3)
- iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation M4)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd 6th generation)
- iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)
Apple emphasizes the importance of keeping software up-to-date to maintain device security. If a user is still running an older version of iOS and clicks a malicious link or visits a compromised website, their device may be at risk of data theft. Devices with updated software were not vulnerable to the reported attacks, and devices with Lockdown Mode enabled are also protected from these specific attacks, even on outdated software. However, it is recommended to update to the latest iOS version as soon as possible.
