A recent sting operation has exposed a clandestine network selling highly sensitive personal data, including call detail records, banking transactions, and tax information. This illicit market raises significant alarms about the vulnerability of India’s telecom and banking systems, highlighting the need for stronger safeguards against unauthorized access and data breaches.

According to the investigation, the network comprises private agencies that offer sensitive data to clients without verifying their legitimacy. Reporters posing as clients made contact with operatives who claimed to possess the necessary tools and expertise to access the requested information.

The pricing structure for this illicit service appears to be well-organized, with different packages catering to various needs. For instance, a basic package included six months’ worth of call records for three individuals, which cost ₹1.2 lakh. More extensive services, such as tracing financial flows and identifying associated accounts, came at a higher price point, up to ₹40,000.

Vulnerabilities in Critical Systems Exposed

Experts warn that the ease with which this network operates points to significant vulnerabilities in critical systems. Legitimate law enforcement agencies require court approval or high-level clearance to access call detail records, yet these operatives seemed to have obtained such information with relative ease. This highlights the need for more stringent measures to protect sensitive data and prevent its misuse.

According to legal experts, accessing call detail records without authorization constitutes a serious offense under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the IT Act, 2000. Penalties range from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 crore, and perpetrators can face up to three years’ imprisonment.

Beyond the immediate consequences, the existence of this network raises broader concerns about national security. Experts warn that deep institutional lapses in data protection, regulatory enforcement, and internal safeguards have created an environment conducive to such illicit activities.
