Fake Army Internship Scam: ₹75,000 Stipend Used to Trap Applicants in Phishing

State cyber authorities in Maharashtra have issued alerts regarding deceptive emails offering fake internships with the Indian Army, following reports of a fraudulent message promising a monthly stipend of ₹75,000.

The Scam Unveiled

The scam targeted individuals by claiming they had been selected for a paid internship, leveraging financial incentives to trick recipients into engaging with malicious links. Officials confirmed the communication was not affiliated with the military and emphasized the importance of verifying such opportunities through official channels.

Fraudulent Email Tactics

The fraudulent email presented itself as a special recruitment initiative, urging recipients to click an “apply” link to secure the position. Cyber police warned that interacting with such links could compromise personal data, potentially leading to unauthorized access to banking information and financial theft.

Genuine Army Internship Program

Defence officials clarified that the genuine Indian Army Internship Programme for 2026-27 is a merit-based, free training opportunity open to students and professionals. The initiative, lasting 75 days, involves participation in defense technology and strategic projects under military supervision.

Stipend and Eligibility

While the program offers a stipend of up to ₹75,000, this amount is contingent on completing the internship and maintaining a minimum 75% attendance rate. Officials stressed that the program does not guarantee employment within the armed forces and focuses solely on skill development.

Phishing Threats and Cyber Safety

The scam emerged amid ongoing concerns about phishing attacks exploiting financial incentives to extract sensitive information. Cyber authorities highlighted that legitimate internship applications are processed exclusively through the AICTE National Internship Portal, rejecting all unsolicited offers.

Maharashtra Cyber Safe App

Additional Director General of Police Yashasvi Yadav noted that phishing remains a prevalent tactic among cybercriminals, prompting the development of the Maharashtra Cyber Safe App. This tool, set for release within a month, aims to detect and mitigate six categories of phishing threats, including QR code fraud, APK file manipulation, and website-based deception.

“The cyber cell urged the public to avoid responding to unsolicited messages and to validate internship opportunities through verified platforms,” said officials.

No formal complaints have been reported yet, but the incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance against cyber frauds leveraging institutional credibility. Officials reiterated that the Indian Army does not solicit applications via email or unverified links, advising recipients to disregard any communication lacking official verification.
