FBI Reports $20.9 Billion in Total Annual Cybercrime Losses in 2025

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) released its annual report on cybercrime trends, revealing that losses resulting from cyber-enabled crimes reached $20.9 billion in 2025, surpassing the previous year’s figure by 26%.

According to the IC3, phishing and spoofing crimes accounted for nearly one-fifth of all complaints, while investment crimes led the way in terms of reported losses, totaling over $8.6 billion.

Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams ranked second, with losses reaching $3 billion, followed closely by Tech Support Scams at $2.1 billion.

Ransomware Attacks:

  • Reported losses reaching $32 million in 2025
  • Commonly used variants include Akira, Qilin, INC/Lynx/Sinobi, BianLian, Play, Ransomhub, Lockbit, Dragonforce, Safepay, and Medusa

The FBI emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent ransomware attacks and mitigate their impact when they occur.
