Ireland’s Data Protection Commission Investigates X Over Deepfakes

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has initiated an investigation into X, the company behind the Grok AI chatbot, over concerns that its technology was used to create and disseminate non-consensual, sexualized deepfakes.

Probe to Examine Compliance with Data Protection Laws

The probe will examine whether X handled user data in compliance with relevant laws, implemented adequate safeguards when deploying the AI tool, and properly assessed the risks associated with its use.

Investigation Prompted by Media Reports

The investigation was prompted by media reports alleging that users could prompt the @Grok account on X to generate sexualized images of real individuals, including minors.

“The Data Protection Commission has been engaging with X since media reports first emerged concerning the alleged ability of X users to prompt the @Grok account on X to generate sexualised images of real people, including children,” said Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle.

Investigation to Assess Risks to Individuals’ Rights and Freedoms

The investigation will also assess whether X’s use of AI tools poses a risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals, particularly children, and whether the company has taken adequate measures to mitigate these risks.

Significant Implications for X and its Use of AI Technology

The outcome of the investigation may have significant implications for X and its use of AI technology.
