Bitcoin Depot Suffers Significant Security Breach

Bitcoin Depot, a leading provider of cryptocurrency ATM services, recently experienced a major security breach.

Unauthorised Access and Data Theft

On March 23, 2026, the company discovered unusual activity on its IT systems, indicating that an unauthorized party had gained access to its network.

According to a filing made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Bitcoin Depot immediately activated its incident response protocols and engaged external cybersecurity experts to assist in investigating the breach.

The attackers were able to steal approximately 50.903 Bitcoins, valued at around $3.665 million, from the company’s digital asset settlement accounts.

Lack of Insurance Coverage and Previous Data Breach

  • Bitcoin Depot reported revenue of $615 million in 2025 but acknowledged that its insurance coverage may not be sufficient to cover all losses resulting from the attack.
  • The company previously notified nearly 26,000 individuals about a data breach in 2024, following an attack that compromised their personal information.
  • Another US-based Bitcoin ATM operator, Byte Federal, disclosed a similar breach in December 2024, affecting 58,000 customers.

Cybersecurity Measures and Future Preparations

The recent breach serves as a reminder of the importance of robust cybersecurity measures for companies handling sensitive financial information.

Bitcoin Depot has taken steps to strengthen its defenses and prevent similar incidents in the future.
